Straightforward advances when the money is needed today.

What a business loan really costs

The APR is the best place to start, but three things decide what you actually pay back.

01

APR, not the headline rate

APR rolls interest and most fees into one yearly percentage, so it lets you compare a term loan, a credit line and a revenue based offer on the same footing. A low monthly rate or a simple interest figure can look cheap and still carry a high APR once fees and a short term are counted.

02

Fees that change the math

Origination fees are often taken out of the money you receive, so a $50,000 loan can land in your account as less. Also ask about draw fees on credit lines, late fees, and whether paying early saves you money or triggers a penalty. Each one belongs in your comparison.

03

Term and payment rhythm

A shorter term means less interest overall but larger payments, while a longer term eases cash flow and costs more in total. How often you pay matters too. Daily or weekly debits feel very different from one monthly payment, even when the totals match.

One loan, three outcomes

Here is a $50,000 loan repaid in equal monthly payments under three different offers. The longer term lowers the payment but costs more in total, and a higher APR raises both.

Illustrative figures, rounded to the nearest dollar. Fees are not included.

Meeting the minimums does not guarantee approval. Lenders also review revenue, cash flow, existing debt and industry.

Not approved yet?

How to get to a yes

Falling short of a lender's minimums today does not mean you are stuck. These steps tend to move the needle within a few months.

  1. Run everything through a business account

Lenders read your bank statements more closely than almost anything else. Keep every sale and expense in one dedicated business account so they can see your true revenue and cash flow.

  2. Keep balances healthy

Overdrafts and returned payments are among the fastest ways to get declined. Holding a steady cushion in the account for three to six months shows a lender you can carry a payment.

  3. Lift your personal credit score

Paying revolving balances down below 30 percent of their limits and correcting errors on your credit reports can raise a score noticeably within a few billing cycles.

  4. Start a business credit file

Open trade accounts with suppliers that report to Dun & Bradstreet, Experian and Equifax, and pay them on time. A business credit history helps you qualify on the strength of the company itself.

  5. Begin with a smaller step

SBA microloans of up to $50,000, community development lenders, credit unions, equipment financing and business credit cards often accept newer or smaller businesses. Repaying one well opens the door to bigger offers.

How we score

Four tests, one score

Each lender is scored out of five. These are the weights behind the number.

Cost transparency30%
Speed to funding25%
Realistic access25%
Flexible terms20%
01

Cost transparency

We check whether a lender shows the price as an APR or a total payback in dollars, and whether origination, draw and early payoff fees are spelled out before you sign.

02

Speed to funding

We compare the advertised timeline with what borrowers report from application to money in the account. A fast quote that funds slowly does not score well.

03

Realistic access

We look at the credit score, revenue and time in business a lender genuinely accepts, rather than the most generous claim in its advertising.

04

Flexible terms

Early payoff savings, fair renewal rules and payment schedules that can ease off in a slow month all count in a lender's favor.

Protect yourself

Red flags to walk away from

Every lender on this list passed our review. Wherever you borrow, these warning signs are worth taking seriously.

No APR or total cost in writing

A trustworthy lender will tell you the APR and the total amount you will repay before you sign. Vague answers usually hide an expensive deal.

Fees requested before approval

Being asked to pay an application or insurance fee before you are approved is a classic sign of an advance fee scam. Legitimate fees are taken from the funded amount.

Pressure to sign today

Offers that expire in hours are designed to stop you comparing. A good offer will still be there tomorrow while you read the contract.

Payments you did not plan for

Daily or weekly debits can strain cash flow far more than one monthly payment. Ask exactly how and when payments are collected.

Stacking a second advance

Taking new funding to cover payments on an existing advance can trap a business in a cycle of rising costs. Fix the cash flow problem instead.

Prepayment penalties buried in the contract

Some agreements charge you for paying early, which wipes out the savings of refinancing later. Ask about early payoff before you commit.

Before you apply

How to choose between these lenders

Match the product to the need

A credit line suits uneven cash flow, a term loan suits a planned project, and equipment financing suits a specific purchase. Pick the product first, then the lender.

Compare the total cost

Ask every lender for the APR and the total amount you will repay in dollars. Two offers with similar payments can cost very different amounts overall.

Check the fine print

Look for origination fees, prepayment penalties and how often payments are taken. Daily or weekly payments affect cash flow more than a monthly bill.

Questions

About these rankings

How do you rank these business loan companies?

Each lender is scored on four tests: cost transparency, speed to funding, realistic access and flexible terms. The weighted results produce a score out of five, and the list is ordered by that score.

Which lender is best for my business?

It depends on what you need the money for, how quickly you need it, your credit and how long you have been in business. Use the quick picks above as a starting point, then compare the full cost of two or three offers.

Do the APR ranges include fees?

APR is meant to include interest and most fees, which is why every figure on this page is shown as an APR. Lenders calculate it in slightly different ways, so always ask for the total repayment amount in dollars as well.

Will checking my options hurt my credit?

Reading this page has no effect on your credit. Many lenders prequalify with a soft check that does not affect your score. A hard inquiry usually happens only when you submit a full application.

Do lenders pay to appear on this list?

Some lenders pay us when a reader visits them or completes their process. That never decides a lender's position or score. Our Advertising Disclosure explains how this works.

Not sure which loan type fits?

Answer four quick questions and we will point you to the type of funding that suits your business best.

Business Loans Companies is an independent comparison site, not a lender. Amounts, APR ranges and requirements are typical figures published by each lender at the time of review and can change. Confirm the current terms directly with the lender before you apply. See our Advertising Disclosure.
